INDO815: Dayak Cerimonial Shield

This is an early Dayak fighting shield that has been painted at a later date for dance and ceremony. The painting on the front is a commercial black paint, and in a style of the early to mid 20th century. About half of the thin rattan binding has been replaced in modern times.     

Previously in the collection of Francois Coppens, Belgium, and is published (April 2000) in his book “Woodcarvers and Headhunters”.
