This is a fun piece that I do not know exactly what it was used for. Middle Sepik River style crocodile dance staff, clan totem or possibly a tool or (sago?) pounder. It is very well carved with intricate Sepik patterns and an excellent crocodile. The patina is good from age and use, and the pointy end shows some wear and abrasions like it was stuck into the dirt. Mounted on a custom metal base. Ex -Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. Donated to the collection in 1978. 20" Tall by 24" Long. Early 20th century, Sepik Area, New Guinea. $950.00
